Lipodema and lymphoedema (lymphedema) are two medical conditions that are often mistaken for one another. Although similar in name, these two conditions impact the body in significantly different ways. It is crucial to understand the difference between the two and how each can be effectively managed and treated.
Management is multimodal and may include:
Skin care education to maintain a protective barrier and prevent infection.
Physical exercise to improve lymph flow
Compression to support the client’s individual needs, (not every client will require compression)
Manual lymph drainage or pneumatic pumps to improve lymph flow.
Other treatment options may include:
Photo biomodulation (formerly called low level laser therapy)
Lymph taping
Negative pressure therapy
The aim of treatment is to reduce and control swelling, prevent infection, improve the functionality, and reduce any pain of the affected area. This is achieved by treating with a specialised form of massage called decongestive therapy which aims to improve the way in which the lymphatic vessels are working and helps reduce the build up of fluid.
Early diagnosis and treatment are paramount in slowing progression and improving client outcomes.
Conservative treatment can include compression therapy, manual lymph drainage, exercise prescription and nutritional support.
Surgical intervention may be an option by an appropriately qualified surgeon after conservative treatment has been undertake.
